Best Books This Year So Far

Published on 15 June 2024 at 12:00

With the official halfway mark of the year approaching, I have decided to give you all a rundown of my top books for each month. There have been many ups and downs with the books I have read this year, and they are all mostly 4–star reads, so hopefully, one of these next five books will have something for everyone.

January – Frostfully Yours by Breanne Bergie

Kicking off 2024, I decided to read a Christmas book, which is not what many people would choose, but I love a bit of Christmas spirit all year round. This book is not mainly for everyone; with this book only being rated 3.5/5 on Amazon, it isn’t necessarily the best book out there; however, if you are looking for a festive read with a bit of ex’s dad and father’s best friend, then you’ve picked the right book. We kick off when Wynter finds her fiancé cheating on her wedding day with not just anyone but her maid of honour; therefore, what does Wynter do? She runs away and ends up straight into the path of Nick Frost, a billionaire who made his fortune off adult toys. Now, if you can see where I am going with things, you will know that Wynter is thinking, “Why waste all this money?”. Thus, we see that Nick and Wynter go on the cruise ship honeymoon, which she was meant to go on with her now ex-fiancé. There had always been a bit of attraction between Wynter and Nick, but we now have them sharing one bed and drinking on this mega-expensive honeymoon. One morning, they both wake up; if you look at that, they are accidentally married to each other 😉. This is an enjoyable read, and I would recommend it to someone looking for a bit of spice and a laugh-out-loud book.

February – The Secret Fiancee by Catharina Maura

I have a thing for billionaire/millionaire romances because here we have another one. I had previously read one of the books in this series, and I loved it, so when February came rolling around and I saw this book recommended to me on my Kindle Unlimited, I couldn’t say no. This book is an arranged marriage book, as all the others in the series are; this one follows Raya and Lex. When they first meet, their chemistry is off the charts, and after Raya accidentally spills her drink on Lex, he demands they play truth or dare as a way for her to make up for it. In the end, although they had a fantastic night, Raya leaves and thinks she will never see Lex again until she attends one of her university classes and finds out he is her professor. Little does Raya know that her parents have arranged her marriage to Lex via his grandmother, and every meeting she has had with him has been Lex’s way of trying to get to know her without the pretence of them being fiancees, hence the book's name. I have been a massive fan of the Windsors book series, and this one did not fail to uphold the standards of the rest of the books.

March – Come with Me by Brooke Montgomery + Brooke Cumberland

I had a bit of a reading slump in March, so I think I only read four books this month as I actually DNFd some of them. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that this book is well-written. This is a prequel book to one of the main series, Sugarland Creek. If you're like me, then you will understand how perfect the mix of a small-town, cowboy and second chance can be when put together. Ayden and Laney were split apart when they were younger due to Ayden’s father and Ayden leaving. After he left, Laney found out she was pregnant with Serena, and with no way to contact him, she had to survive in their small town while Ayden’s father kept breathing down Laney’s neck and forcing her to take money off of him to survive. When Laney spies a video of Ayden online and finds out about the ranch he now works at, she decides it’s about time she told Ayden all about Serena. This book warmed my heart with Ayden being the father he wished he had. One of my pet peeves about fathers in real life is when they don’t step up to their responsibility, but you know that Ayden is not one of those guys.

April – Darkest Sins by Neva Altaj

I have read every. Single. Book. in this series, and not a single one disappoints me; this book made me somehow like stalkers; I'm not sure how, but it did. I have never really been one for stalker-type dark romance books. However, I thought I would try this one based on the reputation of the other books. I am so glad I read this. We are introduced to Kai when his mission goes wrong and he gets injured. Nera, who is on her way home, sees him in an alley and decides to help him by giving him stitches at the veterinary clinic where she works; little does she know that now she has saved his life, she is in control of his heart and soul. For a while after this, we see that he stalks her, and this is a slow burn for all slow burns; the relationship between the two is thoroughly developed, and the chemistry is genuine. For people wanting to get into dark romance books, I would recommend reading this whole series in order; even though they are standalone, they make more sense when read in order. By this point of the year, it was my favourite book. However, May ended up taking the top spot….

May – From Lukov with Love by Mariana Zapata

I usually don’t particularly like slow burns; I don’t typically have the patience for them, but equally, I don’t like instant love, so I wasn’t sure whether I would like this book. Pre-warning for this, if you don’t like books where they don’t end up together until 85% of the way through, this probably isn’t the book for you. I was drawn to this book by the fact that it was a figure skating book; there doesn’t tend to be a lot of these throughout the reading world that are decent (no offence to any authors); you mostly see ice hockey romance but not so many ice skating, so when I saw this on my TikTok, I decided I had to read it. The enemies to lovers in this was the chef’s kiss; I loved how while they hated each other, deep down, they respected and loved one another. I believe it is more rivals to lovers than enemies to lovers because while there is hate there, it's not strong compared to other books I've read. As mentioned, this book has taken the top spot of the year so far, but I'm looking forward to seeing what is in store for me.
